Understanding Anxiety in Our Culture

By Karen Turiel Klein, LCSW-C

If you are experiencing anxiety, you’re certainly not alone. Anxiety is pervasive in our culture.

There are many evolving aspects to our culture that contribute to anxiety and make it difficult to get our feet on the ground. Instant communication and our technology-driven culture push us to be available to our work, children, partners and community as well as to emerging crises without reprieve – leaving very little time for ourselves. Finding good ways to keep it all in balance is often extremely challenging.

Perhaps you end up feeling down, have difficulty staying motivated or find yourself procrastinating. You might suffer from periods of insomnia, especially if endless worries – both big and small – are keeping you up the majority of the night. You might experience the need to cry, and feel lonely or unfulfilled in your life. You might feel a sudden sense of panic, an increase in your heart rate, have trouble catching a full breath or experience a variety of other physical symptoms.

The good news is that there is hope. While anxiety is one of the most commonly diagnosed mental health disorders, it’s also one of the most commonly and effectively treated. With the help of an experienced, compassionate therapist, you can find relief and cultivate more calmness, confidence and satisfaction in your life.
